Which side are you on??… German or Japanese vehicle?
Posted by kingkilo on June 23, 2025 at 9:48 pmThinking of getting a new car, but torn between a Toyota Corolla and a VW Golf. Bit stumped, to be honest.

I’ve done a fair bit of reading, and the consensus seems to be that Japanese cars are far more reliable. But is that genuinely the case or just the usual bias talking?

100% Japan made vehicle over German. Bloody hell, my parents owned a German car and the engine died after 10 years. They are very on top with all the maintenance and service needed too. There was absolutely nothing they could’ve done to fix whatever the problem was since it’s been brought to the shop multiple times for the same reason that caused the vehicle to die. They are now driving a Lexus and it’s 12 years and going strong.

Thanks for your input. I’m glad your parents have a more reliable vehicle now

German motors has more of the luxurious feel and look to it but mechanical wise and longevity, I say Japanese is the winner here.

The new models of all Toyota are sick! They definitely look like a high end car!

You should also consider the cost of maintenance for your vehicle. I’m sure you’re aware that European parts are more expensive and labour cost is going to be higher too. Reliability wise, I can guarantee European vehicles are no where near Japanese. But I’m not suggesting all German made vehicles are not great, but just do your own research.

Personally, I value refinement and performance, which is why I lean towards German cars. If affordability is your main concern, Japanese cars are a solid choice, just don’t expect the same level of driving excitement.
